No, that is it working. The white pellets bind together and set into what feels like a solid block. That block IS the absorbed moisture being held. As it keeps pulling moisture in, the block gradually dissolves and water collects in the base of the container. Hardening first, then dissolving, then water in the bottom, is the normal sequence. Replace it once the pellets are gone and the base is full.
How long does one last?
It depends entirely on the space. A covered boat in humid air fills a container far faster than a dry closet with the air conditioning running. That is why the container is semi-transparent. You can see the collected water and swap it when it is full.
How do I start it?
Remove the lid, peel off the foil cover and leave the white mesh intact, then replace the black lid and set it on a flat surface.
