How to flush and De-Salt Your Boat Motor BETTER! (Outboards or Inboards) [VIDEO]

This will also apply to Suzuki, Evinrude, Mercury, pretty much everybody's modern outboard out there. It will also apply to your inboard outboard motors as well, and this will help get rid of the saltwater out of your engine's cooling system and protect them against saltwater corrosion. At the end of this video, I'm going to show you a little trick that'll keep you from getting stranded if you lose your water pump for whatever reason while fishing or boating out on the water, that'll get you back to the dock. Our old boat was 18 years old and when we traded it in for this one, it looked fantastic. Part of the reason was using products like the Better Boat boat care products to take care of it. Owning boats, running boats, fishing boats, all costs a lot of money. I don't have to tell you guys that if you own a boat. The best way to avoid getting broken down on the water or having a whole bunch of unneeded repairs is to take care of your boat, and products like the ones from the Better Boat company will help you do that.

Other than changing your boat engine's fluids at regular maintenance intervals, the best thing you can do for your engines to prolong their life is to flush them after each use with a product like Better Boat's de-salt solution and flush kit. Almost all of today's modern outboards have some kind of flushing connection on the side of the motor to give you a place to hook your hose up so you can actually flush your motor while the boat's still in the water or sitting on the lift, where getting muffs on lower unit might be a problem. You typically do not run the motor when you're using this flush connection. There's only one possible downside to using this flush connection. If the motor is cooled and the thermostats are closed, you're not going to flush all of the waterways in the motor. You're only going to flush the ones that have the thermostats open to them. If you flush the motor immediately after use when it's still warm, you pretty much are going to flush everything, so you can still use this port.

However, most of the flushing I do is here at the house, the motors are cool, and I'm going to use it from the muffs. Either way is totally acceptable, and if you have an inboard outboard, you're going to have to flush it from the muffs anyway. The boat soap and flush kit actually comes with a couple of neat things. You get a little fireman hose nozzle here. This gives you a lot of different spray patterns and also shuts off really well too, which is nice. You get the flusher itself, which consists of your little attachment and the little bottle that goes on the bottom that you fill with your solution. You can also use this to dispense soapy water when you're washing the boat, instead of dragging a heavy bucket around. That's kind of cool too.

One of the cool things about this unit is it has this knob on top, water only, and mix. When you turn it to mixture, you're getting whatever's in this bottle mixed with the water. When you have it on water only, it's just straight water. So, why does that matter? You can put your solution in here for your de-salting, go ahead and hook it up to your motors, run them until they get up to temperature, change it over to mix, and now you're putting the de-salt solution through nice warm engines covering all of your waterways. So, let's go ahead and fill this bottle up and get to flushing these engines.

The solution's a blue color, so you're going to be able to see when you run out of it as you're flushing the engines, which is kind of nice too. Turn the valve off first. It's connected to the hose. Now the easy part. Turn the water on, fire up the boat, let it warm up. Once your motor's up to temperature, turn it to mixture to flush the engine. You'll flush the engine until that canister is clear and it'll leave a nice protective coating for while the engine's not in use and at least the beginning of your next trip. When it's clear, you're done.

So, there you go. It's as easy as that. You can also use this flush kit as a soaping kit too, allowing you to use soapy mixed water, along with switching it over to clean water for rinsing after you're done with a brush. So, that's pretty cool. Now, let me show you that trick I was telling you about for if you lose a water pump on the water. Remember this flush port we talked about earlier? Almost all modern outboards are equipped with a flush port just like this one. So, let's say you're on the water and your motor sucks up a plastic bag or some debris or something and it knocks out your water pump. You start noticing your engine overheating. Usually, that means you're going to have a really expensive long tow if you can't find a friend to tow you back to the dock. If you've ever had that happen, and you eventually will, that takes forever.

So, what if I told you that most of these boats with these modern outboards have their own water cooling system ready for you to hook up? Better Boat actually makes this 25-foot coiled hose for raw water washdown. Guess what else you could do with it? Hookup one into your raw water connection and hook the other end up to your flush connection, then just turn on your raw water pump and run the motor normally.

I actually learned that trick from Southeastern Marine, the best boat dealer on the East Coast. They were kind enough to share that with me and I'm sharing it with you and you need to hit the share button and share it to everybody else. This works for pretty much all modern outboards. Again, Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury, Evinrude. It doesn't matter. They pretty much all have the flush ports on them. This will get you home safely, running the boat as usual, and help you get back without an expensive tow and not bothering your friends. Plus, it saves you the time of getting that low-speed tow all the way back to the dock. Give me that thumbs up, like button.
