Boat Polish and Compound: Which Step Comes First Start by looking at the gelcoat in daylight. If it looks chalky or faded, polish alone will not bring it back. A marine rubbing compound does the heavier cutting on oxidized areas, then a polishing compound refines the finish and removes the haze the first step leaves behind.
Once the surface is smooth, a boat marine polish adds gloss and a protective layer for the season. Gelcoat that is already in good shape can usually skip the compounds and go straight to polish. If water spots are the main problem, use a hard water spot remover first so you are not polishing over mineral deposits.
Metal needs its own product. Use a chrome and stainless steel polish on rails and cleats, and marine aluminum polish on aluminum. Apply with microfiber wax applicators and buff with clean microfiber cloths, working in the shade on a cool surface.
