How to Choose a Bilge Pump for Your Boat Most powerboats rely on an automatic bilge pump with a float switch that turns on when water rises in the bilge. If you are replacing one, match the hose size and mounting space of the old pump and check the wiring before you install the new one.
A 3 way bilge pump switch lets you run the pump manually or leave it in auto mode, with indicator lights so you can see the status at a glance. Replace cracked or brittle discharge hose with a bilge pump hose kit at the same time so the new pump is not pushing water through an old line.
Every boat should also carry a backup that needs no power. A manual hand bilge pump handles a dead battery, and a small floating bilge pump suits kayaks, canoes and dinghies. For inboard and sterndrive boats, an inline 12V blower fan and matching 3 inch or 4 inch blower hose move air out of the engine space. Keep a spare drain plug kit aboard too.
