If replacing an old strap, unroll the old strap completely, using caution to keep fingers clear. Loosen the central bolt that holds the strap in place. Use lubricant if needed. Remove the central bolt and remove the old strap. Clean the winch spool and fittings and check for corrosion. If galvanized coating is damaged, apply cold galvanizing spray.
Insert the bolt into the winch spool while sliding it through the loop sewn at the end of the new strap. Tighten the central bolt nuts without overtightening, so the axis remains mobile. Wind the new strap onto the winch spool using the crank. Keep the strap flat and wrinkle-free as it winds. Before finishing, attach the hook to the boat ring. Wind until tight and verify the winch locking pawl works properly.
