Off-Season Boat Storage Checklist

Off-season boat storage checklist

A cushion that feels dry on top can still be wet inside the foam. A winter cover needs vents, not a tight seal. Trailer tires over six years old should be replaced. Then work through one checklist for ashore or afloat that saves your checks on this device.

5 quick storage questions

Guess first, then tap for the answer.

Cutaway of a boat cushion: the top feels dry while water hides in the foam
Cushion feels dry on top. Ready to store?
Tap for the answer

No. A cushion that feels dry on top can still be wet underneath and inside the foam. Dry both sides and the foam fully, and stand cushions on edge so air reaches both faces. More below

Covered boat on a trailer with a vent letting air out and rain running off
Winter boat cover: sealed tight or vented?
Tap for the answer

Vented. BoatUS Foundation's advice: a boat needs to breathe while it is covered. Give the cover enough support that rain and snow run off instead of pooling. More below

Boat transom with the drain plug removed and set aside for spring
Stored on land: drain plug in or out?
Tap for the answer

Out. Remove the drain plugs while the boat is stored ashore and put them somewhere you will find them in spring. Reinstall them before launch. More below

Trailer tire with a badge reading over 6 years, replace
How old can a trailer tire get before it should be replaced?
Tap for the answer

3 to 5 years. Most experts say replace trailer tires every 3 to 5 years even if the tread looks fine, and never past six. Cracks or bulges mean replace now. More below

Calendar with a monthly check and a storm cloud for checks after heavy rain or snow
Covered for winter: how often should you check on it?
Tap for the answer

At least once a month, and after heavy rain or snow. Clear pooling water off the cover, readjust straps, look for new wear points and make sure the vents are still open. More below

Who this is for: owners of trailer boats, pontoons and small cruisers putting a boat away for the off-season, ashore or afloat. Pick ashore or afloat in the checklist to hide steps that do not apply. Your owner's manuals and engine maker's instructions come first.

Your manuals come first. Boats, engines and batteries differ, and so do their storage procedures. Get the steps from your owner's manuals or dealer and do them in that order. The items below are reminders, not a substitute.

Cushions, upholstery and moisture
